The Intelligent Meteorology and High Performance Computing Group is founded from the development of computer systems and applications of the National New Generation Global Numerical Weather Prediction System and the National Major Science and Technology Infrastructure "Earth System Numerical Simulation Device (Chinese name: Huan)". Taking account of national major needs and scientific frontiers, and starting from the application of intelligent meteorology in Sichuan Province and the western region, the group studies the theoretical model of numerical weather prediction based on deep neural networks, using artificial intelligence technology to mine the temporal and spatial correlation between complex earth system processes and weather phenomena. The process relies on the supercomputer "Sunway Taihu Light" to develop new applications of artificial intelligence-assisted numerical meteorological model designs and corrections. The group currently has 5 full-time teachers and 3 part-time teachers from well-known universities and scientific research institutions nationally and internationally, among which, 2 are professors, 1 senior engineer, 1 associate professor, 3 doctors and 1 master. The group has a parallel computing cluster consisting of 62 nodes, with a total number of cores in the cluster being 1544 and the total floating-point computing power being 20 trillion times per second. The group has actively carried out project cooperations with Tsinghua University, National Meteorological Administration, National Supercomputing Wuxi Center, etc., and carried out teaching and scientific research cooperations with the Schools of Atmosphere, Software Engineering, and Optoelectronics Technology.
The representative teaching and research achievements include:
In recent years, the group has undertaken more than 10 scientific research projects at the national, provincial and ministerial levels, including 3 National Natural Science Foundation of China and 3 national key R&D projects. It has published more than 50 papers, of which more than 30 are indexed by SCI or EI. It obtained 28 software copyrights, more than 10 invention patents, and won a second prize of Sichuan Science and Technology Progress Award.
The group teachers actively carry out teachings which are integrated with research, and have successively taught courses such as "Introduction to Cloud Computing", "Parallel Programming", "Database Principles and Applications", "C Programming", and other courses, and instructed more than 100 undergraduates and graduate students, and published four textbooks. Related teaching achievements won the first prize of the 8th Sichuan Higher Education Teaching Achievement Award, and students were guided to win national competition awards in top domestic parallel computing competitions such as the National Parallel Application Challenge and the National CPU Parallel Application Challenge.
